Here are 5 Steps on How to Create a High School Yearbook or a Year 12 Graduation Gift

February 3, 2026 By Alison Laverty

Creating a High School Yearbook is a great gift for a Year 12 Graduate. And I’m gifting my son a memory photobook of his year 12 graduation. Like every other parent, you’ll agree with me when I say our children grow way too fast. Many times I wish for time to slow down a little but it never does. Which is why I took time to record videos and photos of my children’s growing years. And did the next best thing, create family memories oh photobooks and videos.

Last Day of School

Are you a keeper of memories too? Then you’ll know why memories are important as a reminder of various achievements. And why our children need it more in these times of uncertainties. If you want to know how you can prepare a Year 12 Graduation gift, this post is for you. Now let’s give your children the memories of our love.

High School Yearbook – Year 12 Graduation

What exactly goes into creating any type of keepsake memory projects? Allow me help you break it down. First of all, you must start organizing early. Write down a list of accomplishments and adventures. For example: Music or Band Performances, Sporting Achievements, Scholarships, Camps or any other activities you feel is important to include.

Note: Consider certificates or anything else to include with their achievements.

Here are five ways to prepare for this book.

1. Choose Photos for a High School Yearbook

Make sure you choose photos that tells a story. Arrange them in the order you wish displayed. If you hire a professional to create your book, your photos must be organised and ready for them. If you continuously add or remove photos, it takes time to edit and can be costly for you.

Compile them into categories—Primary school, High School, Yearly School Photographs, Activities etc… The choices are endless. But you’ll need to choose the best photos that show their achievements.

2. Choose Photos Showing Growth

Children don’t see themselves the way we see them. Why not show them how amazing they are through the lens of your eyes. Let every photo tell a story, of their growth, changes from a young child into a mature young adult. This helps them learn acceptance and gives them a sense of belonging.

Many of us in our childhood don’t remember how we were. And my children often ask my mum how was I in my childhood seeking to be understood. Give them the gift of acceptance through your memories.

3. Choose the Layout of Your Book

Layout is the size of your book—softcover, hardcover, layflat, small, medium, large, squared, landscape or portrait. There are many choices but you must pick the one you like most. I use Mixbooks because the software is easy to use. And I don’t want to waste my time trying to figure out how to use it.

For my photobook, I chose a square 12 x 12 inch signature matte layflat book. I wanted something that they can keep and will last.

You can choose various themes to create your photobook. The software has a drag and drop feature to arrange your photos which is easy to use compared to others. Here is a list of other online software that are also good but price ranges differently.

Remember, a photobook begins with a certain number of pages as a start price. When you add more pages, you pay for each page depending on the chosen layouts.

4. Recall Their High School Journey

I’m including my son’s music performance photos—school’s choir, symphonic and jazz band. They toured Outback Queensland and played for ANZACs day three years in a row. And all the photos and school news goes into his yearbook.

You can also include any sporting achievement or anything else you wish to acknowledge. Go back in time and recall what made them or you feel the pride. Take note of this achievement as a memory in your photobook.

What is your intention with creating this memory?

5. High School Photobook Presentation Ideas

I included categories in my photobook beginning from his primary school yearly photos and chess achievement etc… moving into high school yearly photos. First band performance, music tours and performances, choir photos and a little story behind it all.

When you create a category, you can compile actions photos to show various activities. And organise your photos by yearly achievements.

Preserving these Memories

Our opportunity as parents are really short when it comes to raising children. Time flies so quickly that these little people in our life are now young adults. Memories of any kind always stays in our heart. But here’s a though, giving memories is truly a gift of love.

Are you ready to start creating your children’s high school yearbook? Remember, you’ll have to start taking photos and compiling them now.
