How to Use My Basic Structure to Create Family Story Videos

August 8, 2025 By Alison Laverty

Do you wanting to create a family story video? But … don’t know where to start? This post is for you. Use my basic structure to organise your stories into chapters. So you can create a family story video or photobook to enjoy for years come.

What family story do you wish to tell to the next generation? Write them down. Gather your photos and videos into one place to arrange it into chapters. For example, consider your children’s band performances, sports achievements. Even short breaks to amazing places around the world. These are great for 21st birthday videos.

What were the stories behind those photo memories? Show these moments in your videos. Most of us take thousands of photos and leave them dormant on our mobiles. And forget them. I’m guilty myself.

5 Basic Story Structure to Help Organise a Family Story Video

As with any video project, arrange your images in a way that tells a story. Anyone can show photos on a screen. But when you show on video a life well lived, that storytelling becomes and emotional journey. And that takes time and skill.

I grew up looking through many photo albums. And since digital cameras took over film rolls, my photos and video live in my laptop and mobile phones. With thousands more hidden in my hard drives, SD cards, CDs/DVDs. With two young children, I hardly have the time to sort them. And they never get to see or watch any of my recordings. But I’m changing that by creating more slideshows and videos to make them easily accessible for my family. And I’d like to help you do the same.

These photos and video can create an atmosphere of building confidence and self esteem. To motivate and inspire joy for the next generation.

1. Set the Scene for your Audience

Gather photos and videos of events to celebrate. For example … Milestone or 21st birthday or maybe you are recreating a memory for your parents’ anniversary. Here is where you let your their stories come alive! Write down the history. And gather photos and videos to show the story in action.

2. Recreate a Memory

A moment is a memory of a time and a place. Rekindle a story that touches their hearts. Something out of the ordinary … like an experience that they remember personally. This is after all a celebration of joy in their journey. Show a particular photo or a video to enhance their memory of the event. That will help them reconnect to the past experienced.

3. Focus on Meaningful Photos and Videos

While it’s really challenging to know which photos ignite precious memories. Maybe you can include shared memories. This is why storytelling is important. For example, my mum loves dancing in the early 1950s. I found some old black and white photos of her with a group of friends at Westpoint Gardens in Singapore. Every time she sees those photos, it brings back the memories. She tells me the story of how she loved dancing to a live band and drinking Baby Sham.

4. Reignite their Happiness

Help them discover a forgotten memory. The ones where they’ll go on and on talking about what it felt like in the old days. For example, imagine your son carrying a school trophy or your parents on holiday in the middle of nowhere. Remind them of that lost moment.

5. Why Hold onto Memories

Let’s face it, our photos and videos are the only evidence of our existence. It shows how much we’ve grown from the past to become who we are now. Many of these stories inspire the future generation while reigniting joy of a well-lived life. This is your legacy!
