Here is my family recipe to make spring rolls (popiah goreng) at home.
I studied in Katong Convent when I lived in Singapore. Every day after school, I’d take the bus number 41, off Marine Parade Road to rush home. I knew mum would make a delicious lunch so that made me excited. Click here to know more about my story.
Spring rolls is one of my childhood comfort food.
Make Spring Rolls (Popiah Goreng)
Ingredients
500gms Mince pork or chicken
Mince 2 to 3 pips garlic minced
2 large turnips (bang kuang) or substitute with half cabbage
2 teasp sesame seeds
1 palm sugar disc
Marinade your meat with 1 tbsp soy sauce and sesame oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Method
- Crush garlic and mince roughly.
- Slice finely your cabbage or turnips.
- Toast your sesame seeds till golden brown.
- Fry garlic, add palm sugar and cook until caramelized.
- Then add your meat and fry.
- When meat is half cooked, add toasted sesame seeds.
- Then add you turnip or cabbage little by little until all is cooked and remove from heat.
- Boil 4 eggs and cut them up into small pieces.
- When your spring rolls fillings are cooled, scoop them into a bowl. Ensure you strain the gravy.
- Get two packets of spring roll warps or pastry and peel them into single sheets.
Now its time to wrap your popiah to make fried spring rolls.
Place a little filling and eggs onto your wrappers. Fold the pointed end over the filling, then fold in both left and right sides. Moisten the remaining edges of your wrapper with a little water mixed with corn flour. Now your final step is to fry them up and serve them with a nice chilli sauce. Enjoy this culinary video!
